Safety Precautions When Using Novice Surfboard

01/

Cover your head
Always protect your head when falling off the board. Also, don’t jump off the board. Instead, fall flat, which will prevent you from hitting the reef or the sand bottom in shallower water.

02/

Hold your surfboard
If faced by an oncoming wave, hold your board and turtle roll. Don’t let go of your board unless you really have to but first make sure there is nobody behind you.

03/

Don’t keep the board between you and the wave
If you’re off the board, make sure you keep it to your side. If you keep the board between you and the wave, you are at risk of getting hit by the board when a wave comes your way.

04/

Keep distance
Make sure to keep distance between you and other surfers when you’re in the line-up or paddling back. Also, use the channel to paddle back to avoid getting in the way of other surfers.

05/

Face the beach or the wave
Always face the beach or the wave. Don’t position yourself along the wave when the set is coming. The wave will roll you over and you are likely to end up in a washing machine.

06/

Follow surf etiquette
Respect other people in the water and follow the surf etiquette. It makes the surf safe and more fun. Also, listen to your instructor as they’re there to ensure you learn as well as keep safe.

The Do’s and Don’ts of Novice Surfboard Storage

Store Your Surfboard in a Cool, Dry Place
After an exhilarating day of surfing in San Diego, your board needs a break too. Always store your surfboard in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Prolonged exposure to the sun can cause the fiberglass to delaminate and the foam core to deteriorate. A shaded garage or a dedicated surfboard rack indoors is ideal.

Rinse and Dry Your Surfboard
Before storing your surfboard, make sure to rinse it thoroughly with fresh water to remove any salt, sand, or debris. Saltwater can corrode the board’s components over time, while sand and debris can cause scratches. After rinsing, let the board dry completely to prevent mold and mildew from forming, especially if you have a padded board bag.

Use a Surfboard Bag
Investing in a quality surfboard bag is one of the best ways to protect your board. A bag not only shields the board from dust and scratches but also provides extra padding against accidental knocks. For those in San Diego taking surf lessons, a bag with a shoulder strap can make transporting your board to and from the beach much easier.

Store Your Board Horizontally or Vertically
If you’re storing your surfboard horizontally, make sure to use a padded rack that supports the board evenly. For vertical storage, place the board on its tail, ensuring it’s stable and won’t tip over. Either method helps prevent warping and keeps the board’s shape intact.

Don’t Store Your Surfboard in Direct Sunlight
Leaving your surfboard in direct sunlight for extended periods can cause serious damage. The sun’s UV rays can weaken the board’s structure and cause yellowing. Always find a shaded area or use a cover if you need to leave your board outside for a short time.

Avoid Storing Your Board in High Humidity Areas
High humidity can lead to mold and mildew growth, especially on the foam and padded areas of your surfboard. Avoid storing your board in damp basements or sheds. If you live near the beach in San Diego, ensure your storage area is well-ventilated to combat the naturally high humidity levels.

Don’t Lean Your Board Against Hard Surfaces Without Protection
Leaning your board against hard surfaces without any padding can cause dings and scratches. Always use a towel or a padded rack to protect the board’s surface. This is particularly important if you’re learning to surf in San Diego and your board gets more frequent use.

Don’t Forget to Check Your Board Regularly
Even in storage, your surfboard requires periodic checks. Inspect your board for any signs of damage, like dings, cracks, or delamination. Early detection of issues can prevent more extensive repairs down the line. For those taking surf lessons, regular checks can ensure your board remains in top condition for practice.

FAQ

Q: What type of surfboard should a beginner get?

A: A foam board between 8-9 ft. long is the best beginner surfboard – particularly for absolute beginners. Get 9 feet if you are a heavier/taller person or really want that extra stability, but for many people 8 feet is just fine.

Q: How many fins should a beginner surfboard have?

A: The two side bites help to stabilise the board giving you more control, making this set up better for beginner and intermediate surfers.

Q: Are shorter or longer surfboards easier?

A: The larger body allows more room for you to sit or lay on board while on the water. The increased stability that longboards offer makes the ride smoother and more relaxed than riding a shortboard. The larger body and smoother ride that come with longboards make them the better option for beginner surfers.

Q: How do I know what size surfboard I need?

A: A good place to start is going to be 12"-24" taller than yourself but will vary by the shape and style of surfboard. Fish- Proper fish size is typically 2-4" shorter than your shortboard. Shortboard- I usually recommend going 2-6" taller than yourself. But this depends on the size of waves you'll be surfing it in.

Q: How to turn on a surfboard for beginners?

A: Your leading arm should point where you want to go and over the rail. Moving your arm in your desired direction will move your weight towards your toes, which turns the surfboard on that side. Your leading arm and your nose should be aligned. This creates a synergy that guides your entire body through the turn.

Q: What is the easiest surfboard to catch waves on?

A: Soft-top surfboards are a popular choice for new surfers because of their user-friendly design, which features a foam deck that provides stability and buoyancy that's really useful for someone just starting out.
